The house had to undertake risks and practice higher payments for several card combinations. E.g. if a player gets an Ace and a Jack (both spades) they have a winning combination and can be paid up to 10x the size of the bet! Hence the name of the classic combination that gave this modern game life. Blackjack became extremely popular and casinos were flooded with so-called "Counters". These "card-counters" were thought to be able to guess what the next card would be using specific memory and counting skills. Remember Dustin Hoffman's hero in "Rain man" who made a lot of money out of casino's - this is what we are talking about! However that is a movie and it's not that simple in real life!

Blackjack game rules
In the regular variation of the game, the player needs to get a "Blackjack combination" or reach 21 points (but no more) by adding up the values of the cards. Six decks of 52 cards are used in Blackjack, you can play both on one or several boxes.
Accumulative card value from "2" to "10" makes a nominal (2-10 points). Face cards (Jacks, Queens and Kings) are worth 10 points. Aces are worth 1 or 11, whichever is chosen by the player. Minimal and Maximum bets for boxes are made for each gaming table.
Dealer must collect 17 points or more and take no more cards after that. If your cards total is more than 21 you lose your bet. When all the players are done, the dealer faces up their down card. If the dealers points accumulates to higher than 21 then they lose, however if the dealer's points are equal to yours then the casino declares the game drawn and returns your bet.
So the player will be dealt two cards face up. The dealer gets one face up, one face down. If you make a total of 21 with the first two cards, this is a 'Blackjack' combination and your bet will be paid at 3:2 ratio.(If the dealer has no more than a 10 face up). If dealer's second card is Ace or 10 you will be given the option of cashing in your bet immediately at a 1:1 payout ratio until dealer takes other cards. You can either accept it ("Insurance" button) or cancel ("Stand" button).
If both you and the dealer has Blackjacks, it is a Push or a Tie and you get your bet back. 'Blackjack' is the most "senior" combination. If you are not dealt a Blackjack you can take other cards (or hit one card only) to make a stronger combination. You can double your initial bet following the initial two-card deal(Press "Double" button). Note that in this case you will be hit with one additional card only and one only.
If the first two cards are of equal value you can split the initial two-card hand into two and play them separately ("Split" button). Place a second bet equal to the first and use each card as the start to a separate hand (for each bet). The exception to this rule is the Ace: you can only draw one additional card on each Ace. If a card with the value of ten is dealt on your split Ace (or vice versa: Ace is drawn on to a split 10) the combination makes 21 points but is not considered a Blackjack! By splitting cards you can double your bets in the same manner (if the first two cards are not Aces).
In Blackjack players can insure their risks. If the dealer turns an up-card of an Ace, he will offer you "Insurance" from possible blackjack. If you choose to accept it, press "Insurance" button. Insurance costs half your original bet amount but it is not necessarily an additional bet. In the case that the player accepts insurance and dealer does have Blackjack, your winning Insurance bet will be paid at odds of 2:1. So if you win insurance you recieve your bet back but in all other cases your bet will be lost.
If you have a higher count than the dealer "Va-Bank" casino pays your bet in 1:1 ratio. If a player has "Blackjack" combination their bet is paid at 3:2 odds. If the dealer has more points that you then you lose your bet. Better luck next time!
